Growing Tropical Bird of Paradise in Phoenix Arizona

Nothing says exotic or tropical like the Tropical Bird of Paradise. A native to South Africa, with some care they grow fairly well in Phoenix, Arizona gardens. The name Birds of Paradise comes from the spectacular flower shape, which resembles a birds beak and head plumage.

Tropical Birds of Paradise enjoy and need sun, but they do like afternoon shade. Keep the soil moist with a deep watering in the summer and when planting add 1/2 compost to the natural soil. Tropical Birds of Paradise are cold sensitive and need to be covered during frost warnings. To help keep them warm they do well against the block wall or near a pool. Temps below 50 degrees do not make them happy, so they should be protected from colder temperatures. Plants will not bloom until they are several feet tall and five years old.
