It really isn't possible not to notice the Bouganvillea in Phoenix- they are everywhere!
A very popular flowering bush/ or woody vine, which is found along many of the valley's freeways, is the Bouganvillea. Brilliant in color and it loves the Arizona sun. It is a thorny evergreen bush/vine that grows fairly quickly, doesn't need much water and loves soaking up the rays.
The most interesting thing about Bouganvilla are the flowers, most people do not realize that the brilliant pinks and purples on the vine are not the flower, but rather the bracts. The flower is almost unoticeable trumpet shaped white flower tucked within the colorful bracts.
I love Bouganvillea's for their outstanding color and rate of growth. When left untamed they are quite striking with Aloes and other succulents. We have several bouganvillea's on the south side of our home. Bouganvillea's are native to South America and come in many colors including: purple, yellow, white, and various shades of red.
Bouganvillea's can be messy on a windy day, so don't plant too close to a pool. They are also cold sensitive and should be covered during frost warnings.
