Hibiscus Pistil and Stamen

Few plants scream tropical like the stunning Hibiscus plant.Hibiscus are another gorgeous tropical plant that grows well in Arizona. They are a popular plant in the Phoenix area.

They are available in many colors including red, pink, yellow, orange. Most will say they take full sun, but in Arizona I find mine grow best with some partial shade. They have flourished under the date palms. Orange Hibiscus tend to be more delicate than other colors, so be sure to provide some afternoon shade for this one.

The flowers are large trumpet-shaped with five or more petals and are native to tropical and sub tropical climates. The flower only blooms for one day, but the shrub is constantly flowering, so you will almost always see a bloom on mature plants. The most commonly seen Hibiscus shrubs in Phoenix are red, pink, yellow and orange in color. They are also available in purple, blue, white.

In Hawaii they are traditionally worn behind a woman's ear as a way to determine her availability (marital status.) If worn on the right side she's taken, if worn on the left she's looking.

Hibiscus have an average height and width of 3-6 feet and look great around a swimming pool or as a hedge. Anywhere you are looking for a tropical feel.
