Whether you love them or hate them, Oleanders do very well in Phoenix Arizona. Few plants can tolerate the abuse of 110 degree reflected sun, little water, poor soil and pollution from thousands of vehicles. Yet you will find the Oleander along every major freeway in the valley doing just fine in spite of their environment. The Oleander is a showy shrub that can also be grown as a tree. It is native to Morocco, the Mediterranean and southern Asia.

The Oleander remains green year round and produces showy flowers that grow in clusters at the end of each branch. Most popular colors in Phoenix are white pink and red.

The downside to this plant is that it is one of the most poisonous plants in the world and contains many toxic compounds to both animals and humans. The entire plant is toxic and it should never be used to make a fire as the fumes are highly toxic.

This plant can handle heavy pruning. It can grow some 20 feet tall, so it makes a great natural fence or a wonderful small tree.
