Plumeria cutting potted |
For me the fascination with Plumeria started from a trip to Hawaii. Although they are just about everywhere in Hawaii they are not native to this state. Plumeria are native to Central America. The delicate flowers produce an intoxicating scent and are used extensively in the making of leis. It is easy to see why so many people love this tropical flower.
I am performing somewhat of my own experiment at home to see the growth differences from seed and from a cutting.
Right now I have a seedling of a "Maui Beauty" Plumeria. The seedling has three leaves and is sitting in my window sill for now.
My cutting is from a "Nebel's Rainbow,"aka as "Lei Rainbow", Plumeria. The cutting is aprox. 14" with three tips. Shown on the left are photos of the new Plumeria plant and cutting.
Materials Needed:
Pot for new cutting, Cactus Mix Soil, Potting Soil, and Rooting Hormone, sunny location for cutting to take root.
I used an old container and filled it with a mixture of 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 Cactus Mix. You can also use Perlite in the mixture. Next I wet the soil and make sure that it is draining well.
Then I ran some water over the bottom of the Plumeria cutting and dipped it into the Rooting Hormone powder. Plant cutting 2-3" under the soil. My cutting isn't that straight, so I tied it back onto a small stake to try and straighten it.
Now we'll wait and see~
I am going to keep track of the growth rate of both the cutting and the seedlings and update this page while they grow.
UPDATE: March 28 our seedling has two new leaves.
