Phoenix, Arizona in the gardening world is usually referred to as Low or Subtropical desert. We are located in the Sonoran desert, which is considered a sub tropical desert and in the low desert (under 5,000 in elevation).
This just means that it is very hot and dry in the summer and cooler but still dry in the winter. Rainfall that we recieve usually happens in short bursts, such as during the monsoon season.
This puts Phoenix, Arizona in gardening zone 9-10 according to USDA charts and Sunset Zone 13. When choosing plants you want to make sure that they will be able to grow here, just because the big box stores sell a plant doesn't mean it will actually flower or give fruit here in Phoenix. Same goes as just because the tags say annual flower, doesn't mean that same flower will not be back next year if taken care of.
Arizona's state flower is the Saguaro flower blossom, you can see an awesome display of them in Tucson at the Saguaro National Park.
